Staff Highlight: Shunta
Shunta has been with our organization since we first opened our doors over two decades ago, making her one of our longest-term employees!
Starting out as a caregiver at St. Anthony Village shortly after its opening in 1999, she has always employed her people-skills and strong qualities to serve residents in our community. She especially connected with residents in our Memory Care cottages, finding the one-on-one interactions with residents to be the most rewarding experience. She reflects that she was very young at the time – barely 19 – and had a lot to gain from working so closely with elders in the community.
Shunta transferred to our sister facility, Assumption Village, when it opened in 2002, as it was a closer commute to her N Portland home. She still remembers the very first resident who moved into Assumption at its opening. Shortly after, she transitioned from Caregiver to Med Tech to Lead Med Tech. She was known as a reliable employee, always working closely with the Nurse and Administrator, proving to be a strong support to the team. As such, she later accepted the role as Resident Services Manager. She reflects fondly on the past days in Resident Services, as it gave her an opportunity to lead a department that she loved.
After 10 years of leading Resident Services, Shunta went through administrative training and became Assumption’s dedicated Administrator. In this role, Shunta is known to juggle many tasks, wear many hats, and help lead the building through anything that comes along, including a worldwide pandemic.
While COVID-19 has been the main focus of her time and attention over the past two years, she is grateful that Assumption Village has not been as negatively impacted as many other facilities; for the most part we have stayed healthy and safe, due to the care and attention that our president and CEO has put into COVID testing, ongoing training, PPE equipment, and facility cleanliness. She appreciates how closely everyone has come together during this difficult time in the world.
Shunta’s favorite aspect of working with SAGE is that we truly live up to our mission; we serve low-income elders in our community who may otherwise not have resources. She loves helping people and considers herself a natural “fixer.” At the end of each day, she feels fulfilled knowing that she makes a difference with the work she does. At the heart of her service to our organization is her deep care and respect for the residents and staff.
Outside of work, Shunta loves going on walks with her tiny, adorable dog, Barbie. She enjoys watching documentaries and anything involving law and military detectives. She is also very interested in science and space.
Thank you, Shunta, for all the various positions you have taken on to keep Assumption Village as vibrant as it is today. We have been blessed to have such a strong, hard-working, and caring long-term employee on our team; especially in such an integral role as Administrator. We appreciate all that you have done for us, and continue to do!
